On Monday, January 16, 2012 our nation will celebrate the Martin Luther King, Jr. national holiday. On that day the Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee of Santa Barbara and the community will honor and celebrate his life at a 9:00 am program of the 17th century African-American dance and gospel song at De La Guerra Plaza followed by a singing march with banners up State Street to the Arlington Theatre. The 11:00 am program "Retelling the Story - The Civil Rights Years" will feature the young winners of our essay/prose contest, a massed community choir, dancers and teens interviewing Mr. Wallace Shepherd for his insights as he marched and protested with Dr. King. The afternoon concludes with a complementary lunch at the nearby First United Methodist Church. There is no charge for any of the day's events and people can come and go as they wish.
